The First Sign of Colon Cancer: None

Colorectal cancer includes cancer of the colon and rectum. It is one of the most common cancers in the United States. Each year, about 150,000 people are diagnosed. Thanks to better screening, fewer older adults are getting this cancer.

However, rates are rising in younger adults, including people under age 50. In fact, colorectal cancer is now one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in younger adults.

45 is the new 50

Because more cases are being found at younger ages, screening guidelines have changed. In the past, most people were told to start screening at age 50. Now, experts recommend starting at age 45. Screening earlier helps find cancer sooner, often before symptoms begin. When found early, colorectal cancer is much easier to treat.

More than one way to screen

  • Colonoscopy: A test where a doctor looks inside the colon using a small camera. Polyps (small growths) can be removed during the test before they turn into cancer.

  • Stool tests: These are done at home and look for hidden blood or abnormal cells in the stool. If the test is positive, a colonoscopy is needed next.

  • Imaging tests: Tests like a virtual colonoscopy use imaging to look at the colon. If something abnormal is found, a regular colonoscopy is still required.

Some people are at higher risk and may need to start screening earlier or be tested more often. High-risk groups include people who:

  • Have a family history of colon or rectal cancer

  • Have inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis)

  • Have certain genetic conditions

  • Had radiation treatment to the stomach or pelvis area

Screening saves lives

It can find cancer early and even prevent cancer by removing precancerous polyps. If you are 45 or older — or have higher risk — now is a great time to talk with a provider at MI Partner Health about your risks for colorectal cancer and screening options.
