Pain: What You Need to Know

Pain is a normal response to physical or emotional stress. It’s also a common experience, but everyone feels pain differently. Sometimes it is short-term (acute), like after an injury or surgery. Other times, pain can last for months or longer (chronic pain). Learning about pain and how to manage it can help improve daily life and well-being.

Importance of Pain Education

Knowing how pain works can help people feel less worried and more in control. Pain is not just about the body – it can also be affected by stress, emotions, and daily activities. Education about pain helps people understand what to expect, how long pain might last, and what treatments are available.

Ways to Manage Pain

• Stay Active: Gentle movement, like walking or stretching, can help reduce pain and improve mood. For some conditions, exercise is recommended as a first step.

• Mind-Body Approaches: Practices like mindfulness, meditation, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help manage pain and stress. CBT teaches practical ways to change thoughts and behaviors related to pain.

• Medication: Some medicines can help with pain, but they are not always the best choice. Non-opioid options like acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and certain nerve pain medicines may be used, depending on the type of pain. Always talk to a healthcare provider about risks and benefits.

• Other Treatments: Physical therapy, acupuncture, massage, and other therapies may help some people. These are often used together with other approaches.
